Case Study: RSOverland Arctic Expedition

Case Study: RSOverland Arctic Expedition

Pushing the Fogstar Drift PRO 560Ah to Its Limits

When you think of off-grid travel, you probably picture remote beaches, mountain views, and the occasional wild camp.

The Arctic is something else entirely. For RSOverland, their second expedition pushed both their van and their electrical system further than ever before. Travelling through polar night conditions, with temperatures dropping as low as -30°C, they needed a setup that could deliver reliable power with absolutely no margin for failure.

This case study looks at how the Fogstar Drift PRO 560Ah performed in one of the harshest environments on Earth, and what it takes to stay powered when conditions are at their worst.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your experience in the Arctic?

RSOverland completed two Arctic expeditions in their self-converted Mercedes Sprinter. The second trip took them all the way to Nordkapp, the northernmost drivable point in Europe, during the depths of winter.

This wasn’t just cold weather camping. This was full off-grid living in complete darkness, with temperatures consistently between -15°C and -30°C.

“The Arctic in polar night isn't like winter camping elsewhere in Europe. It's not just the cold. It's the relentless darkness, minimal solar charging, and zero margin for equipment failure.”

In these conditions, your electrical system isn’t a convenience. It’s critical to staying warm, safe, and fully operational.

Q: Why did you choose Fogstar for your second Arctic trip?

After years of running AGM batteries, RSOverland knew they needed something more capable for a serious expedition. AGM had limitations. Heavy weight, slow charging, and limited usable capacity made it difficult to rely on in extreme environments.

Switching to lithium wasn’t optional.

“We needed high capacity in a single unit, and at the time, the 560Ah was the highest available on the market.”

Beyond that, it came down to trust.

“When we reached out with technical questions, Fogstar were always prompt and informative. That gave us confidence they’d be there if we needed help on the road.”

With a 10-year warranty and strong customer support, the decision was made.

Q: How did the Fogstar Drift PRO 560Ah perform in Arctic conditions?

Simply put, “Flawlessly.”

For weeks, the battery powered everything required for full-time off-grid living, including heating, refrigeration, lighting, and essential daily systems.

“We pushed the battery hard for weeks in temperatures between -15°C and -30°C…It just worked.”

Even during long periods with little to no solar input, the system remained stable.

“No voltage drops, no unexpected drain, no issues whatsoever.”

In an environment where failure isn’t an option, reliability becomes everything.

Q: How did the Fogstar Drift PRO 560Ah compare to your previous AGM setup?

The difference was immediate. With AGM, only around 50% of capacity was safely usable. With the Drift PRO, that increased significantly, delivering nearly three times more usable energy from a similar weight.

“AGM was painfully slow to charge…the Fogstar accepts a much higher charge rate.”

Cold weather performance was another key factor. AGM batteries lose significant capacity in low temperatures, while the Drift PRO maintained consistent output.

“The upgrade wasn't cheap, but after experiencing the difference…we'd never go back.”

Q: Did you experience any challenges in extreme cold?

The built-in heating system within the Fogstar Drift PRO 560Ah played a key role, automatically protecting the battery during charging in low temperatures.

“The Fogstar Drift Pro has a built-in heater that automatically activates… we had zero issues even at -30°C external temperatures.”

With minimal solar input during polar night, most charging came from driving and occasional hook-ups. The large capacity meant fewer charging cycles were needed overall.

“We’ve managed 13 days completely off-grid in winter without needing to recharge.”

Q: After long-term use, what stands out most?

After nearly three years of use across multiple trips and conditions, one thing stands out: consistency.

“It’s not exciting or flashy, it just works, consistently, without drama.”

From Arctic temperatures to summer heatwaves, the battery has delivered stable performance without degradation.

“We don’t think about the battery anymore, we just trust it.”

For expedition travel, that kind of reliability is invaluable.

Q: What advice would you give to others heading into extreme conditions?

“Don’t cheap out on your electrical system… if your power system fails in the Arctic, you’re potentially in danger.”

For extreme environments, reliability matters more than anything else. When you’re operating in sub-zero temperatures with no margin for failure, your system needs to perform consistently, every time.

“Choose reputable brands with solid customer support…that kind of backup matters.”

Built for Real-World Extremes

Fogstar Drift batteries aren’t just designed for off-grid living. They’re built to perform when conditions are at their worst.

From extended Arctic expeditions to everyday van life, this case study shows what’s possible when your system is built around reliability, capacity, and real-world performance.
